Goethals Bridge New Jersey-bound lanes to be Closed during the weekend of May 18-21

Lane closings also scheduled for the George Washington Bridge and Holland Tunnel


The New Jersey-bound lanes of the Goethals Bridge will be closed during the weekend of May 18-21 to allow the existing bridge approach ramps – which now feed westbound traffic onto two lanes on the eastbound span – to be realigned to allow traffic to feed onto the new westbound structure, which will open no later than 4 a.m. Monday, May 21. During the closing, travelers heading westbound into New Jersey will be diverted to the Outerbridge Crossing or the Bayonne Bridge. The bridge’s eastbound lanes will not be impacted.

Lane closings also are planned for the George Washington Bridge and the Holland Tunnel this weekend and/or next week for ongoing construction and repair projects.

Goethals Bridge:

  • The bridge’s westbound lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday, May 18, and will reopen no later than 4 a.m. Monday, May 21, to accommodate ongoing construction work leading to the opening of the New Jersey bound structure on May 21.

Holland Tunnel:

  • One westbound lane in the tunnel will be closed during overnight hours from Monday, May 21, through Thursday, May 24, from 11:59 p.m. each night through 5:30 a.m. the following morning. The closings are needed for ongoing tunnel repairs.
  • One eastbound lane in the tunnel will be closed during overnight hours from Monday, May 21, through Thursday, May 24, from 11 p.m. each night through 5 a.m. the following morning. The closings are needed for ongoing tunnel repairs.

George Washington Bridge:

  • Three lanes on the bridge’s upper level westbound side will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, May 18, until 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19.
  • Two lanes on the bridge’s upper level eastbound side will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, May 18, through 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19.
  • Two lanes on the bridge’s Upper Expressway eastbound side will be closed from 12:01 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 19.
  • The bridge’s lower level will be completely closed from 10 p.m. Saturday, May 19, through 8 a.m. Sunday, May 20, to accommodate a major bicycle event.
