MEDIA ADVISORY - PORT AUTHORITY TO PILOT TEST NEW SECURITY TECHNOLOGY IN PORT AUTHORITY BUS TERMINAL

Date: Aug 10, 2018
Press Release Number: 128-2018

The Port Authority will launch a pilot test next week on a new security system designed to help law enforcement professionals detect whether a person traveling through the Port Authority Bus Terminal is concealing an explosive device such as a suicide vest.

The technology, in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration, will be tested Monday, Aug. 13 through Wednesday, Aug. 15 during morning and evening rush hours in the South Wing main concourse. It will have no impact on operations or the ability of commuters to travel into and out of the terminal.

The systems being tested are known as stand-off explosive detection units. They trigger an alarm if a person is carrying or wearing an improvised explosive device when they pass by the devices. No radiation is emitted by the units, and no anatomical details of a person are displayed.

The testing is part of the Port Authority Police Department’s efforts to incorporate new technology at agency facilities to protect the traveling public.
